Census Bureau Announces Hartville, Missouri as “Population Center” for United States | Business and finance

WASHINGTON – (BUSINESS WIRE) – November 16, 2021–

The US Census Bureau calculated the population center of the United States based on the 2020 census population of 331.4 million. The center is located near Hartville, a town of about 600 residents in south-central Missouri.

Every 10 years, since the first census in 1790, the Census Bureau calculated the “population center,” which is a point where an imaginary, flat, weightless, rigid map of the United States would balance out perfectly if everyone was of the same weight. This point represents the average location of where people live in the United States.

The first published calculation of the population center dates back to 1790, when it was recorded as Kent County, Maryland, 23 miles east of Baltimore. Over the next 22 decades, the population center gradually shifted westward as the country expanded. More recently, it has moved southwest, reflecting both immigration and inner movement of people from the northeast and midwest to the Sun Belt.

Cities in Missouri have been the centers of population since 1980. The greatest displacement by miles occurred between 1850 and 1890, when events like the California Gold Rush and land speculation in Oklahoma helped spread people. further west.

“The population center movement helps tell the story of southern and western migration this century,” said Ron Jarmin, acting director of the Census Bureau. “It helps visualize where we live. “

The NGS commemorates the national population center with geodetic markers since 1960.

“NOAA’s work to study and map our country captures snapshots of history over the years,” said Nicole LeBoeuf, deputy administrator of NOAA’s National Ocean Service. “These metrics also form the basis of the services Americans rely on every day, such as driving routes and community planning.”

Hartville Mayor Rob Tucker was thrilled to hear his town named the 2020 Population Center. “It is a great feeling to live in Hartville. It has always been a city with a big heart and it is now the heart of America. “

An event in the spring of 2022 will recognize Hartville as the population center of the United States. The event will include the on-site unveiling of a survey memorial. More details will be available in the coming months.
